OO Programming Newsletter #25 from Bruce Eckel March, 2001 There may be (may have been) an interruption on the server due to Northpoint abruptly closing its doors. = = = Contents = = = * Summer schedule * C++ Lives! * Thinking in Java Hands-On Seminars, Bay Area & London * Java Enterprise Programming: April & May * Objects & Patterns, April in Prague * CORBA/Java * J2EE: Amaio development and consulting * The Python9 Conference * Moving to Zope * NerdsOnBicycles.com * You may not get replies See the Calendar for the current schedule: http://www.mindview.net/Calendar/Calendar.html =================================== * Summer schedule We're currently working on the summer schedule for Crested Butte, Colorado. The calendar should begin to fill out shortly. http://www.mindview.net/Calendar/Calendar.html =================================== * C++ Lives! For one thing, the new version of the C++ seminar has been in development for the last 9 months, and we plan to do the first installment this summer. Also, the solutions guide is very close to being done; but it needs an extra push by me (my time seems to have been extra-fragmented lately). And Chuck Allison (who did the "Thinking in C" CD) *may* become the co-author of volume 2 and finish that project (with some inevitable participation from me, of course), if everything works out well. Chuck would be the ideal choice for this task -- send him an email at cda@freshsources.com to express your enthusiasm for this possibility. On another C++ note, Scott Meyers is helping organize a workshop on template programming: http://www.oonumerics.org/tmpw01/ =================================== * Thinking in Java Hands-On Seminars, Bay Area & London The Thinking in Java seminar is a five-day intensive that has the same structure as the "Thinking in Java, 2nd ed." book. Lectures and assisted exercises will rapidly launch you into the world of Java. The next seminar in the Bay Area will be held May 14-18: http://www.mindview.net/Java.html The London seminar went well; for the next one, watch the above URL or this one: http://www.mocha-ware.com/ (Click on "training") =================================== * Java Enterprise Programming: April & May The Java Enterprise Programming Seminar shows when, how and why to use the technologies in the Java2 Enterprise Edition. This exercise-intensive course covers EJBs, Servlets and JSPs. The next seminar takes place May 7-11 in the San Francisco Bay Area. In parallel with Objects & Patterns, there will also be one in Prague, April 23-27 (to make a sort of mini-conference). More details can be found at: http://www.mindview.net/Seminars/J2EE/ =================================== * Objects & Patterns, April in Prague The next Objects & Patterns seminar is in Prague, April 23-27. Prague is a wonderful city so you won't be sorry if you can convince management to send you: http://www.mindview.net/JavaDesignPatternsIdioms.html =================================== * CORBA/Java There's a new installment of Dave Bartlett's "CORBA Junction" column up at: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/components/ Dave teaches the CORBA/Java Seminar: http://www.mindview.net/CorbaJavaSeminar.html The next one of these will probably be June 18-22 in Crested Butte. =================================== * J2EE: Amaio development and consulting The folks sponsoring the Prague seminars provide consulting services, specializing in J2EE and XML; they are a Sun-authorized Java Center. You can find out more at http://www.amaio.com, or by contacting Martin Vlcek at mvlcek@amaio.com. Please mention that you saw it here. =================================== * Python9 Conference The closing keynote at the conference turned out to be one of the most pleasant speaking experiences I've had. It was captured on video along with an interview and will eventually be on Dr. Dobb's Journal Technetcast on the Web. I'll post the URL on the "Thinking in Python" page when it's ready. http://www.mindview.net/Python/ThinkingInPython.html =================================== * Moving to Zope I'd been thinking about it for awhile, but after the Python conference I became convinced it was time to move to Zope (www.Zope.org). This is an application server that does a whole lot more than deliver web pages and run CGIs. The more I work with it, the more I like it. However, it means that I am (finally) beginning to re-architect the web site, so there may be a few bumps in the process. Please be patient. The upside is that Zope makes it much easier to maintain a web site, and to build applications for the web. So my hope is that I'll be more productive and be able to offer more on the site. Zope is free, open source and built in Python. It's a great way to learn what "application server" means. You can easily download it and install it on your Windows machine (it includes a web server and SQL database in the package). The only downside is that the documentation is a bit ragged, but the online "Zope Book" and howtos are at least a tolerable way to learn it. =================================== * NerdsOnBicycles.com Bill & Bruce's excellent adventure (the New Zealand bicycle tour) inspired me to reserve www.NerdsOnBicycles.com, which is up but preliminary. The first trip may be Python-based, and through the Grand Tetons. If you know of a good bicycle touring company, please email my assistant: waterstrider@hotmail.com. =================================== * You may not get replies We've recently changed things over so that the server handles emails. The last newsletter was sent under these conditions, and I (thankfully) didn't get the usual flood of autoreplies, etc. However, I also didn't get any messages you may have intended to send (not that I'm encouraging these, just letting you know). We're trying to figure it out. I never thought I would have to learn so much about the Internet. It's a huge (albeit interesting) distraction. ___| Until Next Time... |________________________ Java programming questions: http://www.mindview.net/TIJ2/JavaQuestions.html Speaking & Seminar schedule: http://www.mindview.net/Calendar/Calendar.html Anyone can sign up for this free newsletter by sending an email to join-eckel-oo-programming@earth.lyris.net.
