What to do? We've decided to bring the Hands-On Java seminar closer to you. We've chosen 3 cities for the first tour: Chicago, Atlanta and Boston. - TIJ Chicago February 4-8 2002 (venue to be defined, date may change) - TIJ Atlanta March 25-29 2002, Center for Manufacturing Information Technology http://cmit.edi.gatech.edu/Atlanta/CMIT_visitors.htm - TIJ Boston April 22-26 2002 (venue to be defined, date may change) We are currently looking for venues in Boston and Chicago. Of course we could use hotel space, but we have an offer for you. If you have a training room equipped with a whiteboard, a projector and desks in your organization, with a minimum capacity of 15 people, and you are willing to host the seminar at your location, we will give you one complimentary pass to the seminar! =================================== * Discussion: Does Java Need Checked Exceptions? This is an essay, followed by a discussion page, about the idea that the experiment of Checked Exceptions just may not have turned out that well. http://www.mindview.net/Etc/Discussions/CheckedExceptions =================================== * Event on the same topic On November 28, I'll be doing a live online seminar on the issue of checked exceptions, with benefits going to relief for September 11: http://www.pughkilleen.com/thirteenthweek/september11.html =================================== * New discussion tool in Zope, basis for a new BackTalk design Continuing my Zope education, I've created the tool that allows you to add comments to a discussion page, in remarkably few lines of Python & Zope. This is also the basis for a new version of the "BackTalk" comment system that I've been struggling with since Bill Venners and I dreamed it up in Prague this Spring. (Rocky: "That trick never works!" Bullwinkle: "This time, for sure!"). =================================== * The seminar schedule -- "Design Patterns Applied" Rescheduled Due to travel and budget restrictions, we've decided to reschedule to sometime during Feb-April. I'll put it on the calendar as soon as we decide. http://www.netobjectives.com/c_dpa.htm -- "Art & Technology of Web Design" Daniel Will-Harris and I are zeroing in on a date, probably February or March. http://www.will-harris.com/seminar/ You can find all the seminars listed on the calendar: http://www.mindview.net/Calendar =================================== * TIJ Solutions in polishing mode The exercises in the book were not nearly as simple as I thought they would be, as I discovered: it took me over 1.5 months of most of my time to get them all solved. In print, this would be a book of over 500 pages! Over the next few weeks I will be polishing the package -- including the addition of supplemental exercise problems (not solutions... this way you'll have something left to solve!), and the creation of a special discussion group for those who purchase the solutions. I'll also be getting the delivery mechanism in place. After getting a couple of gripes about not having the solutions in the book, I did a little research and added the following FAQ: http://www.mindview.net/Etc/FAQ.html#SolutionGuide I'll announce the solutions in this newsletter when they're ready. Sorry for the delay. =================================== * Swing seminar We're starting to create a more advanced seminar focusing on the Java Swing library. Here's a discussion page where you can tell us exactly what you want to see: http://www.mindview.net/Etc/Discussions/SwingSeminar =================================== * Server-Side Java seminar Ditto for a seminar focusing on server-side programming in Java: http://www.mindview.net/Etc/Discussions/ServerSideSeminar =================================== * Recommendation for projector If you have recent experiences buying or using a data projector and can make recommendations, I would greatly appreciate your input at this URL: http://www.mindview.net/Etc/Discussions/ProjectorRecommendations =================================== * Changing over to Mailman Now that the new server is stable (and fast -- not only the machine, but the T1 connection! Thanks again to Bill Ostaski at Cove Communications, www.cove.com), I will be moving the newsletter over to Mailman, an application written in Python which has proven to be very reliable and robust. So don't be surprised if the next newsletter looks a bit different.
