And for those of you who think that Microsoft is the evil empire, please keep your counsel -- this wasn't my idea, it was Larry O'Brien's (the long-time former editor of Software Development magazine, creator of Game Developer and AI Expert magazines, who has given seminars with me and helped create the original "Hands-On Java CD ROM," etc.). Basically, Larry decided he would like to translate "Thinking in Java" into C# and we've worked it out. The publisher wants my name on the cover as the second author and I'm sure I'll learn plenty about it from my involvement, but basically Larry's the expert (and he will be giving the C# seminar, which we hope to launch in Crested Butte this summer). Publication should be sometime this summer, and it will be announced here. Larry has an especially valuable perspective, because although he likes C# and .NET as useful platforms upon which to build applications, he is not a Microsoft sycophant and tells it like he sees it, so if there's something he doesn't like or a situation that looks like it will be problematic (for example, because of Microsoft's copyrights on the most important aspects of .NET), he writes about it. So whether you decide to use C# or not, you'll find this a valuable and insightful analysis of the language. Just like the other "Thinking in..." books, the electronic version will be distributed freely from the web site. We hope to have it up (along with the BackTalk feedback system) within the next few weeks, so stay tuned. =================================== * Prague Mini-conference in May The courses for the Prague event (May 13-17) include four five-day seminars: Objects & Patterns: 5 days of Java Design Created & Taught by Bruce Eckel & Bill Venners XML and Friends: A Course in Software Integration Created & Taught by Dave Bartlett Hands on Extreme Programming Created & Taught by Alan Ewald & Owen Tallman Sun Microsystems will be a sponsor and promoting the event, so it's possible we could fill up -- last year the European attendance was good, and seemed relatively unaffected by the US economic situation. Because of the exchange rates in Eastern European countries, we have traditionally used discounted rates for the Prague conference. As a result of this and of very reasonable lodging and food costs once you're in Prague, it turns out to be quite competitive to travel to Prague from the US to take a seminar, plus you get to see a wonderful city. The folks at Amaio, who are hosting the seminar, are very nice and will help you with all your travel and lodging details. You can find details and full descriptions of the seminars at: http://www.amaio.com/seminars/ =================================== * Summer Internships in Crested Butte It looks like I will be starting the process of a Third Edition of Thinking in Java in the near future, and this time I will be involving the people who normally work and/or teach with me, as well as others, in the development of this book. In addition, I will be offering two summer internships that will take place in Crested Butte, for people who are interested and capable of doing technical work on the Third edition of the book. Internships are normally for college students or graduate students, but we are certainly open to talented people who are in a position to take a sabbatical from the normal work world. Please note we are looking for high-caliber people who have a strong facility with the Java language. For full details, see: http://www.mindview.net/Etc/Internship/ =================================== * Running into Elliotte Rusty Harold In the last newsletter, I mentioned that I was staying in New York (Brooklyn, specifically) for a time. I'm near the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and I happened to be walking through there the other day and who did I see but Elliotte Rusty Harold, taking a lunch break from his normal prolific writing day (Elliotte runs the Cafe Au Lait web site devoted to Java, which I visit to keep up on what's going on). We went to lunch together; it turns out he lives only two buildings down from where I am. New York seems huge and small at the same time. =================================== * Zack's funny web site My friend Zack Urlocker, former VP at Borland (we used to do speaking tours together) has put up a web site containing original high-tech humor and satire, just right for people who understand the world of programming: http://www.valleyofthegeeks.com In particular, you'll enjoy the New High Tech Dictionary 2.0 at http://www.valleyofthegeeks.com/Features/fog0000000048.html ___| Until Next Time... |________________________ Java programming questions: http://www.mindview.net/Books/TIJ/JavaQuestions.html Speaking & Seminar schedule: http://www.mindview.net/Calendar/ Anyone can sign up for this free newsletter by sending an email to join-eckel-oo-programming@earth.lyris.net.
